Der Anfang
Vor heute genau 4 Jahren am 09.02.2006 machte ich mich auf um mein erstes Unternehmen zu gründen. Ich hatte davor schon lang geplant ein Unternehmen im Internet zu starten doch auf Grund des Alters, anderer Interessen und Abhängigkeit meiner geplanten Co-Gesellschafter es nie geschafft. In der 12. Klasse war es dann aber soweit, es musste kommen, denn ich wollte Geld und meine Sparbücher waren aufgebraucht. 
Nachdem einer meiner besten Freunde das gleiche Leid plagte, überlegten wir uns wie wir es lösen könnten und ich erklärte ihm, dass es online zahlreiche Möglichkeiten gibt und ich seit Jahren einen SMS Versand machen möchte, der kostenlos für die Nutzer ist aber beim Absenden des Buttons ein Banner geklickt werden muss. Da man damals bei ebay 15 Cent bekam, sollte das die große Geldgrube werden, folglich verbrachten wir die Schulstunden damit Planungen, Hochrechnungen & Co auszuarbeiten. (Ein Blatt aus dieser Zeit hat die Zeit überlebt und habe ich mal eingescannt)
Im Prinzip kommen über solche Zwangsklicks recht schlechte Conversions zu Stande und ähnelt schon eher dem Cookie Dropping als einer echten Medialeistung. Natürlich brauch ich nicht sagen, dass diese bescheuerten Rechnungen nicht möglich waren, 2006 war es bereits soweit, dass solche Zwangsklicks überall mit Klickvergütung verboten war, so dass wir nun natürlich bei Kosten von rund 20€ pro 1000 SMS eine neue Möglichkeit brauchten den Dienst zu finanzieren. Wir kamen zwar schnell auf die 1000 oder mehr SMS am Tag aber finanzierten den Dienst maximal mit Adsense und konnten gar nicht an Gewinne denken. Um den Dienst herum bauten wir ein Handy Portal und versuchten dort auch noch über Tarife usw. Geld zu verdienen. Leider auch mit mäßigem Erfolg, dabei hatte ich doch gelesen was bei Google so wichtig ist und war mir vor dem Start sicher: ich gehe sofort auf Platz 1 für ALLE Keywords. Als dann die Seite gestartet war, waren wir nirgendwo am ranken – was, wieso? Die anderen haben doch auch Frames und ranken und meine Seite ist mit Keyword im Title Tag und im h1. Dann bekam ich mit, dass alle Linktausch betreiben also tat ich das auch. Wozu Linktausch? Ich hatte keine Ahnung also setzte ich Linktexte wie “360 Free SMS im Jahr”, irgendwann bemerkte ich, dass ich zwar für überhaupt nichts ranke aber für “360 Free SMS im Jahr” auf 1 stehe – eine SENSATION – der Heilige Gral wurde gefunden, ich habe den Google Algo geknackt!!! 
Meine Geschichte als SEO begann, ich gründete wenige Monate später noch mein heutiges Haupt-Unternehmen. Das alte lief zwar auch noch aber es gab weder Erfolg noch groß Motivation meines Partners zu arbeiten oder sich fortzubilden – eigentlich hatte er ja auch Recht: es brachte uns keinen Cent Gewinn und eine Besserung war auch nicht in Sicht.
Mich hatte das Thema im Gegensatz zu ihm gefesselt und ich wusste, dass ich hier reich werden kann, also folgte ich Blogs / Abakus usw., lernte unsinniges Zeug aber auch viele wertvolle Kollegen kennen, denen ich an der Stelle danken möchte: die SEO Szene rockt! Mir war es immer wichtig, dass mir niemand etwas schenkt und ich kann bis heute sagen, dass ich noch von niemanden auch nur einen Cent einfach so bekommen habe oder mir in irgendeiner Form untreu gewesen bin – schafft es selbst und schleimt nicht bei den Top Leuten rum, um da den Super-Tipp zu bekommen, macht euch nicht lächerlich, den EINEN Tipp gibt es sowieso nicht. Die Schleimspur einiger Leute verursacht bei mir regelmäßig stundenlanges Kotzen. Wichtig ist hingegen der Austausch, um die eigenen Erfahrungen zu bestätigen oder einen neuen Blick auf Sachen zu bekommen, an die man so noch nicht gedacht hatte. Einfach ein Geben und Nehmen von Erfahrungen & Links, SEO lebt genau davon und nicht von Geheimniskrämern und Geizhälsen.

Ich spar mir einfach mal Namen zu nennen, da würde ich sowieso jemanden vergessen aber danke an meine guten Kollegen, ein paar sind leider völlig krank im Kopf aber der Großteil ist der Wahnsinn und SEO & CO so wohl einzigartig als Berufszweig.
Meine 10 wertvollsten Erfahrungen
So genug gelangweilt: nun wie versprochen meine wichtigsten Erfahrungen, die ich in 4 Jahren mit viel Geld und Blut gezahlt habe – unsortiert.
Der richtige Weg der Monetisierung
Zu Beginn meiner Karriere habe ich viel gleichzeitig gemacht, zum einen SEO aber auch viel Traffic über verschiedene Werbeplätze eingekauft, soweit so gut – meine Monetisierung lief allerdings nahezu ausschließlich über Adsense und ich hatte TKPs von 50-80€ und dachte ich bin der King, weil ich „so viel“ aus dem Traffic hole. Weit gefehlt: Ewigkeiten später habe ich gemerkt, dass in der Regel (vor allem bei SEO Traffic) solche TKPs ja absolut lächerlich sind, da geht es ja um TKPs in 4 stelliger Höhe während man bei Adsense selten 3 stellig erreichen kann. Hätte ich damals die Fähigkeiten gehabt, die ich heute habe, hätte ich damit Geld gedruckt. Leider zu spät erkannt, seid nicht so doof und verschenkt das Potential. Geht individuell für jedes Projekt alle Möglichkeiten durch wie man es monetisieren kann und findet dafür die beste Lösung.
Affiliate ist auch nicht immer die Beste Lösung sondern i.d.R. nur wenn man Traffic zu einem sehr spezifischen Thema hat wie z.B. „Kreditvergleich“. Hat man nun eine Seite zum Thema „Kino“ hat man es schwer da irgendetwas zu verkaufen und sollte auf Adsense zurückgreifen. Recht easy aber auch das muss man gut durchdenken und vor allem testen.
Mut zum Risiko / Geld investieren
„Wer nichts riskiert kann nur verlieren“ – das zählt insbesondere auch für unsere Branche. Ihr sollt kein Geld verschenken aber manchmal muss man Erfahrungen sammeln, die Geld kosten. Ich habe so unfassbar viel Geld für Adwords verbrannt aber kann heute sagen, dass ich 100% weiß was ich tue und das ist mehr wert als das was ich da verbrannt habe aber ohne mich zu verbrennen würde ich heute nicht diese Fähigkeiten besitzen und damit Geld verdienen.
Andererseits kosten Projekte Geld, spart nicht am falschen Ende – wenn ein Projekt Geld bringt auf Platz 10, warum nicht das Geld direkt reinvestieren um auf Platz 10 mehr Geld rauszuholen oder um auf Platz 1 zu gehen? Wer es nicht tut ist dumm und ich war lange Zeit sehr dumm!
Konzentriere dich auf deine Stärken / Outsourcing
Was macht deinen Erfolg aus oder was glaubst du kannst du am besten? Dann mach genau das! Du kannst nicht texten, designen, coden, vermarkten usw. – zumindest nicht auf hohem Niveau und dauerhaft. Du willst ein Projekt starten mit 1000 Unterseiten? Dann schreib die bitte bitte nicht selbst, das macht keinen Sinn: hol dir mehrere Leute, die das schreiben. Das kostet natürlich wieder Geld aber denk darüber nach wie viel Zeit es dir spart und das es am Ende wieder rentabel ist.
Gleiches gilt für Design, SEO, Coding usw. – es sind alles Themen, die müssen einfach von jemandem gemacht werden, der es kann. Stimmt ein Faktor nicht, kannst du nie das Maximum rausholen und das sollte doch das Ziel sein. Source einfach das aus, was dir zu viel Zeit kostet und im Prinzip langfristig gesehen wieder rauskommt: also nahezu alles Mache nur noch das was du kannst, am liebsten machst und wo du denkst „so wachse ich am schnellsten und darum geht es: GROW!“
Nicht zu viel Ablenkung – konzentrier dich auf dein Ziel
Klar, wir arbeiten im Internet, da ist der nächste Satz jedem ganz klar, total abwegig aber doch so wichtig. Wir haben durch Twitter, Xing, Facebook, Skype usw. unzählig viele Ablenkungen, die am Ende so viel Geld kosten. Wer „die 4 Stunden Woche“ gelesen hat weiß wie viel man in kurzer Zeit erreichen kann. Ich würde nicht so radikal sein, manche Sachen sind sinnvoll, manche aber auch nicht andere wiederum machen einfach Spaß. Hier muss man einen Weg finden Networking und Spaß nicht zu vernachlässigen aber trotzdem konzentriert zu arbeiten. Ich habe Wochen da besteht 100% meiner Arbeit aus Skype & Twitter lesen, das darf nicht sein.
Die Conversion – ohne Design / Programmierung & alle Infos geht nichts
Der wohl größte Fehler überhaupt ist die Vernachlässigung der Qualität und Funktionalität der Webseite. Je nach Thema kann ohne das richtige Design und bestimmte Funktionen einfach keine Conversion zu Stande kommen. Ich habe es Ewigkeiten vernachlässigt aber das Design ist nach dem Traffic das wichtigste überhaupt, denn es sind Steigerungen der Sales durch minimale Änderungen von mehreren hundert Prozent möglich. Es geht alles darum dem User übersichtlich die Funktionen, die Produkte & die relevanten Infos zu liefern und gezielt zum Kauf zu bringen.
Das heißt auch, dass man hier genauso ein Projekt aufbauen sollte, wie man es selbst gerne hätte: wenn ich ein Notebook kaufe brauche ich Infos: welches hat die Komponenten die ich brauche? Welche werden da vom Anbieter empfohlen? Was sagen Nutzer dazu? Wo finde ich den günstigsten Preis? Ist dieser Shop seriös? Und so weiter… Dazu zählen ein Notebook-Finder und ein Preisvergleich, beides erfordert Coding – dazu bringt es aber auch nicht ohne seriösen Aufbau und die richtigen Elemente am richtigen Ort – dafür braucht man einen Top Designer (die gibt es leider in Deutschland fast gar nicht) und dafür Erfahrung und viele a/b oder multivariate Conversiontests.
Erfüllt ihr nicht das was der Nutzer gerne hätte und auf die richtige Art und Weise, ist er weg und kauft nicht, geht weiter und findet irgendwann das richtige oder gibt verzweifelt auf und macht das verrückte Offline Shopping. Ich habe lange Zeit das ganze Potential meines Traffics verschenkt und könnte noch weinen, so geht es schätzungsweise ~100% von euch, da fällt mir auch jemand ein, der sicher 10 Millionen mehr im Monat machen könnte, wenn er mal sein Lieblingstheme weglassen würde
Nicht immer alles glauben
Ohne viele Worte, geordnet absteigend vom Lächerlichsten zum Normalsten: Content (Text) ist King, Backlinks müssen themenrelevant sein, Blogspam bringt nichts, man braucht nofollow Links, Links müssen rot sein, AVZ bringen nichts, ich bin Milliardär, die Erde ist eine Scheibe, ich heirate Jessica Alba
Viele Projekte & Trafficquellen um das Risiko streuen
Ich versuche grundsätzlich alles so weit wie möglich zu streuen, früher habe ich zu 100% über Adsense monetisiert. Was wäre gewesen, wenn Google wie bei vielen anderen den Account gekickt hätte? Ich wäre von einem Tag auf den anderen ohne Einnahmen dagestanden.
Mischt eure Quellen: verschiedene Partnerprogramme, verschiedene Netzwerke, verschiedene Arten der Einnahmen.
Kann man sich drüber streiten aber was unumstritten sein sollte ist, dass man sich nicht auf eine Trafficquelle verlassen darf. Ich sorge dafür, dass niemals mehr als 50% meiner Einnahmen von einer Quelle wie Google abhängen. Was ist wenn Google plötzlich etwas völlig verrücktes macht? Google zeigt nur noch eigene Seiten an, weil der Index sonst zu voll ist J
Und was noch wichtiger ist, setzt nicht auf nur ein Projekt, was wenn das Projekt nicht mehr läuft? Produkt wurde durch neues abgelöst (z.B. UMTS irgendwann LTE), Partnerprogramm geschlossen, aus Google gekickt usw. Es kann so viel schief gehen, seid nicht dumm!
Sei der Beste: SEO auf 1 oder gar nicht
Mano man habe ich viele Top10 Rankings! Nein, keine Angeberei, da mir das Zeug nichts bringt. Auf 1 bringt jedes Key Geld, wenn es auf Platz 1 500-1000€ bringt wird auf Platz 10 0€ möglich sein. Also konzentriere dich nicht auf viele Keywords sondern gehe auf Platz 1 für ein Keyword und nicht für 10 Keywords in die Top10 außer einen Sichtbarkeitsindex bringt es dir nichts…für mich zählt Platz 1, sonst nichts!!!
Unnötige Arroganz
Teilweise muss ich mich dafür schämen, habe mich da zwar nie direkt für etwas besseres gehalten aber ich dachte, dass ich einfach zu viel wert bin, um mit jemand unprofessionellem zusammenzuarbeiten. Daher habe ich lieber Deals gelassen als ihn durchzuziehen weil er dem Partner mehr bringen würde als mir. So hatte ich aber gar nichts davon, blieb auf der Stelle stehen und komme lieber nicht voran – extrem dumm!
Man kann eben nicht immer auf genau einer Ebene sein, mehr bekommen als man gibt ist sicher schön aber so läuft es nun mal nicht. Man soll sich nicht über den Tisch ziehen lassen aber lieber solch einen schlechten Deal als gar keinen. Klar, es kann auch nerven, das muss man aber abwägen und nicht pauschal ausschlagen.
Egal wie viel du verdienst und professionell du bist: bleib auf dem Teppich, es gibt immer jemanden der mehr verdient und du warst auch einmal unprofessionell.
Alleine oder mit Partner?
Ich habe mittlerweile eine Menge Firmen gegründet und auch einige mit anderen Leuten zusammen und nochmal 10 Mal so viele sind genau daran gescheitert: zusammen ist man nicht immer stärker.
Es kommt immer auf das Projekt an und wie man sich ergänzt. Es bringt nichts mit jemand zusammenzuarbeiten der einen nicht ergänzt: 2-5 Leute sind sicher sehr cool aber was bringt es wenn alle sowieso nur das gleiche können? Wenn Zusammenarbeit, dann Leute die verschiedene Gebiete abdecken: der eine kann gut verhandeln, der andere ist technisch versiert, der andere hat ein Gespür fürs Marketing usw. – ist dies nicht gegeben und man kann die Kompetenzen nicht klar verteilen kommt man nicht voran, das merke ich immer wieder.
Es macht im Endeffekt alles nur langsam und man startet Projekte viel später mit dem gleichen Ergebnis. Eine Zusammenarbeit sollte bereichernd sein und besser sein, als wenn man es alleine macht. Man sollte einfach daran denken, dass der Kuchen um X geteilt wird also auch um X besser laufen muss, um aufs gleiche Ergebnis zu kommen – idealerweise muss die Chance dadurch bei X Mal 2 liegen.
Vor allem sollte man sich nicht auf Leute verlassen von denen man weiß, dass sie unzuverlässig sind – so macht das alles keinen Sinn. Bei mir sind schon so viele geplante Projekte gestorben aufgrund schlechter Geschäftspartner. Verlass dich auf keinen an dem du Zweifel hast.
